SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Two wins by the Canadian women's curling team Thursday moved them closer to clinching a berth in the semifinals of the Olympic tournament.
Canada, which has earned a medal in all four of the Olympic curling tournaments but without a gold since 1998, posted an 8-5 win over Denmark and then defeated Switzerland by the same score.
Those two victories gave Canada a 5-0 record at the top of the 10-team, round-robin tournament. Sweden is in second place at 4-1, its only loss having come against the Canadians.
Sweden also won twice Thursday, getting past Switzerland 9-8 and then edging Denmark 7-6.
Switzerland is alone in third place with a 3-2 record while China, Britain, Japan and South Korea are all at 2-2.
The United States picked up its first win of the Olympics by defeating Japan 8-6.
The top four teams at the end of the round-robin competition will earn a spot in the semifinals.
