Big wave pro surfing series schedule announced

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Pro surfing's Big Wave World Tour opens April 15 in Chile and ends next year at Hawaii's Jaws break, the Association of Surfing Professionals said Wednesday.

The six-stop series covers both hemispheres and includes new stops at Jaws and at Dungeons in South Africa.

"The addition of Dungeons and (Jaws) really cement the foundation of this tour in determining the world's most comprehensive big wave surfer," ASP Deputy Director Peter Mel said in a written statement. "The variety of each of these breaks and the culture of the local communities makes this a very special thing to be a part of."

The ASP acquired the Big Wave World Tour last year, which will allow top ASP surfers such as Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning to participate.

The Southern Hemisphere half of the schedule runs April 15-August 31 and includes Punta de Lobos, Chile; Pico Alto, Peru and Dungeons.

The Northern Hemisphere schedule runs Oct. 15, 2014, to Feb. 28, 2015. The events take place at Todos Santos, Mexico; Punta Galea, Spain and Jaws on the island of Maui.
