SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands won the Olympic gold medal Wednesday in 1,000-meter speed skating.
The silver went to Canadian Denny Morrison and the bronze to Michel Mulder, who won gold earlier in these Olympics in the 500-meter race.

Shani Davis, trying to become the first man from the United States to win gold in the same event three straight times, finished a shocking eighth.
It was the fourth victory in five speed skating events at these Olympics for the Netherlands.
