Rain stops Fed Cup series in Spain

SEVILLE, Spain, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Rain in Spain caused postponement of Sunday's Fed Cup quarterfinal with Spain ahead 1-0 in the best-of-five series against the Czech Republic.

Only one of the two scheduled singles matches was played Saturday before rain hit. Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1, 6-4 for the first point of the series.

The Czech Republic's Klara Zakopalova was up 6-3, 2-0 over Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in the first match Sunday when weather brought another delay and officials decided to finish the series Monday.

The current schedule has Zakopalova playing Suarez Navarro in the third singles match with Torro-Flor and Zahlavova to follow but that is expected to be changed.

The fifth match of the series is doubles with Czechs Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Safarova going against Spain's Lara Arruabarrena and Silvia Soler-Espinosa.

The winner of the Czech-Spain series advances the April 19-20 Fed Cup semifinals against either defending champion Italy or the United States. Italy was up 2-0 after Saturday's play in that series.
