NHL: Edmonton 3, San Jose 0

EDMONTON, Alberta, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Ben Scrivens turned aside an astounding 59 shots Wednesday, setting an NHL record in the process and bringing Edmonton a 3-0 win over San Jose.

Edmonton, owner of the worst record in the Western Conference, won its third in a row.

The 59 saves were the most ever made during a regular-season shutout. The record for most saves in a regular-season game was set by Sam LoPresti, who made 80 stops for Chicago in the Blackhawks' 3-2 loss to Boston on March 4, 1941.

It was Scrivens' fourth shutout of the campaign. He has stopped 93 of the last 94 shots he has faced during games against Nashville and San Jose. This was only the 20th win of his career scattered over three seasons with Toronto and the Oilers.

Scrivens broke the record of 54 saves in a regular-season shutout set by Mike Smith in a 2-0 Phoenix win over Columbus on April 4, 2012.

Justin Schultz scored midway through the first period and Scrivens survived the San Jose bombardment until Taylor Hall boosted the Edmonton lead 6:10 into the third. Jordan Eberle added a power-play goal with 1:20 remaining.

Antti Niemi took the loss, giving up the three goals on 27 shots.
