Michael Young announces retirement

DALLAS, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Michael Young, who played in the All-Star Game seven times and spent most of his career with the Texas Rangers, announced his retirement Thursday.

Young holds the Texas franchise records for most games played (1,832) and hits (2,230). He spent 14 years in the majors.

Texas traded Young to Philadelphia following the 2011 season and he was then dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers last August.

Young, 37, appeared in 1,970 big league games and finished his career with 2,375 hits and a batting average of .300. He twice led the majors in hits, producing 221 of them in 2005 and 213 in 2011.
