WENGEN, Switzerland, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Frenchman Alexis Pinturault parlayed a solid second run into a first-place performance at the men's World Cup slalom at Wengen Sunday.
Pinturault was in seventh place after the first run but turned in a time of 50.77 seconds to claim his second career victory in the slalom.
"I tried to attack and take my chances in the second run and I was hoping for a podium [finish], but I never dreamed it could be a victory for me here today," Pinturault said.
Pinturault tallied a two-run time of 1 minute, 42.87 seconds and moved into third place in the men's overall standings. Felix Neureuther of Germany placed second with a 1:43.21. Marcel Hirsch of Austria, who led after the first run, wound up in third place.
Conditions were on the warm side and the course deteriorated at a stead pace. "In some parts of the race I took too much risk while in others I simply had no speed," said Hirscher, the leader in the slalom standings.
Bode Miller of the United States finished back in 26th place with a time of 1:45.85 but picked up his first World Cup points in the slalom since 2011.
