FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Rex Ryan has signed a contract extension to remain coach of the New York Jets past the 2014 season, the team said Thursday.

Ryan, 51, posted an 8-8 record as coach of the Jets this past season, taking his overall record with New York to 42-38 in six seasons. The team made the playoffs both of Ryan's first two seasons but hasn't appeared in the post-season since.

The Jets announced the contract extension via Twitter. Terms of the extension weren't released by the team. Ryan's previous deal was to expire after the 2014 season.

The Jets were 5-4 this past season before a three-game losing streak. The team won its last two games to finish at the break-even point.
