SALZBERG, Austria, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Austrian ski-jumping champion Thomas Morgenstern remained hospitalized but was expected to recover after a serious crash near Salzburg.
Doctors in Austria told reporters Morgenstern was out of mortal danger Saturday but remained in intensive care with serious head and lung injuries suffered in the spill during a practice session in Bad Mittendorf.
Morgenstern's injuries will likely have an effect on the jumping competition at next month's Winter Olympics. Russia's R-Sport said Morgenstern was among the elite competitors in the sport. He won two gold medals at the 2006 games and a third in 2010. He is also a three-time world champion in ski-flying, which uses larger hills and producers greater distances in the air.
Morgenstern was practicing for a World Cup ski-flying event when he took his high-speed spill.
