NHL: Detroit 3, Los Angeles 1

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Jimmy Howard turned aside 44-of-45 shots Saturday, backstopping the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over Los Angeles.

Howard made 20 of his saves in the third period, keeping the Red Wings close in a tight game.

Detroit broke a 1-1 tie with 7:54 remaining in the third when Tomas Tatar scored on the rebound of a Riley Sheahan shot.

Daniel Cleary added an insurance goal 5 1/2 minutes later as Detroit improved to 2-1-0 on a five-game road trip.

Tatar and Sheahan each finished with a goal and an assist.

Drew Doughty scored and Jonathan Quick made 23 saves for the Kings, who were coming off a 4-2 win over Boston Thursday.
