HOBART, Australia, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Qualifier Garbine Muguruza lost only four games Saturday in beating Klara Zakopalova for the championship at the Hobart International in Australia.
Muguruza claimed the last seven games of a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Zakopalova that gave her her first WTA title. Muguruza swept through qualifying and the main draw without losing a set.
She took two-thirds of the points in the quick second set, coming away a winner in her first WTA finals appearance in just 70 minutes. Muguruza won 57 percent of the points both serving and receiving and finished off half of her 12 break chances.
Zakopalova fell to 2-11 in WTA title matches. She lost her last five finals, last winning in September 2005. The second-place check of $21,400 won Saturday boosted her career winnings total of about $3.1 million.
She was able to claim the doubles title later Saturday as she teamed with a Monica Niculescu for a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8 win over Lisa Raymond and Zhang Shuai. It was her fourth doubles championship overall and second already this year.
Muguruza picked up $43,000 for winning the tournament. He career purse totals nearly $600,000.
She as the second WTA qualifier to collect her first main draw champion in as many days. Tsvetana Pironkova picked up the Apia International Sydney title Friday with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over No. 9-ranked Angelique Kerber.
