LPGA announces season-long points race for 2014

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- The LPGA announced a season-long points race for 2014 that will result in a $1 million payout for the eventual winner.

The LPGA's "Race to the CME Globe" will begin with the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic Jan. 23-26 and conclude with the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Nov. 13-16. The GME Group Tour Championship is scheduled for Nov. 20-23.

"The addition of this concept fundamentally connects every event on our tour and promises big things in 2014 and beyond," LPGA Tour Commissioner Michael Whan said in a release. "The stakes have risen dramatically and the excitement level goes up for our players and each of our tournaments."

Players can earn points toward the year-end title in each tournament. The five major events will be given 25 percent more weight in points but all other events are worth the same number of points, the LPGA said. Winners of the majors will collect 625 points and those who win regular tour tournaments 500.

All players who make a tournament cut will earn points. For events without a cut, the top 40 and ties will gain points. At the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, which is a more limited field, the top 20 and ties can earn points.

The players who are among the top 72 in points or have a win on the LPGA Tour would gain entry to the Tour Championship. The points standings are to be reset before to Tour Championship to assure that the points race would be won at the final tournament.
