Wawrinka captures ATP title at Chennai Open

CHENNAI, India, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Stanislas Wawrinka didn't lose his serve in a 7-5, 6-2 win Sunday over Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the championship match at the Aircel Chennai Open in India.

Wawrinka, seeded first as the world's No. 8-ranked player, only dropped serve three times all week in winning a second title at Chennai. He swept all eight of the sets he played in the tournament.

It was the fifth championship overall for Wawrinka and his fifth finals appearance in the last year. That recent success enabled him to reach the Top 10 in the rankings for the first time.

Roger-Vasselin, the tournament No. 7 seed, saved four early break points in the first set, but Wawrinka got the match's first break in the 11th game and then held at love for the set. He took nearly 60 percent of the points in the second set to clinch the win.

Wawrinka, improving to 5-9 in ATP finals, picked up $72,490 in addition to the first-place trophy. He's won nearly $9 million in his career. Roger-Vasselin, slipping to 0-2 in tile matches, took the runner-up check worth $38,180, giving him a career total purse of about $2.3 million.
