The 37-year-old American birdied 4-of-5 holes to grab the lead at 10-under and cruised from there in a rare strong showing for him at Kapalua.

"I don't know how many years I've been here," he said. "This is seven or eight probably, and I've had maybe one or two decent finishes, but nothing so spectacular."

Also firing a 66 Saturday was Dustin Johnson, who forged a second-round tie with Jordan Spieth (70) and Matt Kuchar (68) at 10-under.

Knotted for third one shot further back were Michael Thompson (71) and Webb Simpson (71).

Ryan Moore (71) and Kevin Streelman (71) followed in seventh at minus-8.
