LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Super-middleweight boxer Andre Ward has sued his promoter, Goossen Tutor Promotions, claiming his nine-year contract violates California labor laws.
Ward, 29, of Oakland, claims his contract violates a seven-year limit on personal services contracts, similar to boxer Oscar De La Hoya's nearly identical contract with promoter Top Rank, which was voided in 2001.
In the court filing Ward claims his 2004 contract, with extensions in 2009 and 2011, have prevented him from contracting to box for any other promoter, the Courthouse News Service reported Wednesday.
Ward is the World Boxing Association super-middleweight champion. He won a gold medal, representing the United States, in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
