NHL: Detroit 3, New Jersey 1

NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Johan Franzen scored the game-winner with 7:20 left in the third period Friday, lifting Detroit to a 3-1 decision over New Jersey.

Jonas Gustavsson had to make only 10 saves to pick up the win, but he surrendered the first goal of the game to Andy Greene on the power play midway through the first period.

The Red Wings' defense then corralled the Devils the rest of the way with New Jersey eventually suffering its third straight loss.

Joakin Anderson tied the game with 36 seconds left in the middle period and Franzen's ninth of the season pushed Detroit in front. Tomas Tatar added an insurance goal on the power play with 1:03 remaining.

Cory Schneider stopped 18-of-21 shots in defeat.
