Dallas marathon canceled due to weather

DALLAS, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Frigid temperatures and an impending ice storm have led organizers to cancel Sunday's MetroPCS Dallas Marathon, it was announced Friday.

Dallas is in a region predicted to be hit by 1-2 inches of sleet accumulation with 0.1-0.25 inch of freezing rain expected. Temperatures, after a predicted low in the teens Friday night, were to be in the mid-20s through Saturday and still be around freezing at Sunday's scheduled race start time.

"Safety of our participants, as well as our volunteers and spectators, is our primary concern on MetroPCS Dallas Marathon race weekend," race organizers said in a statement on their website.

The statement added that after marathon officials met with Dallas authorities, "the decision had been collaboratively made the cancel the 2013 MetroPCS Dallas Marathon.

"We regret that the race will not go on as planned but are confident this decision is in the best interest of our runners, volunteers, spectators and the general public."

The statement also said a health and fitness expo scheduled to take place this weekend on conjunction with the race was canceled.
