LOS ANGELES, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose will need surgery after tearing a knee ligament, the team said Saturday in Los Angeles.

A magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed a tear of the medial meniscus tear in Rose's right knee, necessitating surgery that will sideline him indefinitely.

He sustained the injury in Chicago's 98-95 Friday loss in Portland. The Chicago Tribune reported his leg appeared to buckle as he abruptly changed direction after a turnover without the ball.

The 25-year-old missed all of last season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

Rose was averaging 15.9 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 10 games this season.
