Tigers deal Fielder to Texas for Kinsler

DETROIT, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers announced Wednesday they had traded five-time all-star first baseman Prince Fielder to Texas for second baseman Ian Kinsler

The one-for-one, blockbuster trade also involves cash considerations to the tune of a reported $30 million that the Tigers will send to the Rangers.

The power-hitting Fielder has seven years left on a contract that totaled $214 million when he signed it prior to the 2012 season. He has a no-trade clause in that contract, but reportedly agreed to the deal.

Fielder's career best 50 home runs came when he was with Milwaukee in 2007. He batted .313, a career high, with 30 homers and 108 RBI during his first year with the Tigers in 2012. Those numbers dropped last season with Fielder hitting .279 with 25 homers and 106 RBI.

He has struggled in the playoffs during each of the last two seasons.

Kinsler has twice reached 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season with the Rangers. He batted .277 with 13 home runs in 2013 while driving in 72 runs and stealing 15 bases. He has a career batting average of .273.

Kinsler is signed through 2017 and will earn $16 million in 2014. There had been speculation Kinsler might be dealt by the Rangers since they have prized prospect Jurickson Profar ready to play at second base.

By getting rid of Fielder's large contract, Detroit could be in position to re-sign 2013 Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer.
