RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Manny Malhotra scored on a breakaway 2:40 into overtime Tuesday and the Carolina Hurricanes broke a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Philadelphia.
On the game-winning play, the Flyers' Mark Streit was knocked off the puck, creating a turnover in the Hurricanes' zone.
Ron Hainsey corralled the loose puck and fed it to Malhotra, who broke in alone on Steve Mason and shoveled a backhander into the net for his first goal since March 26, 2012, as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.
Jordan Staal knotted game 1-1 when he scored with 53 seconds remaining in regulation, just 3 minutes after the Flyers' Scott Hartnell had broken a scoreless tie with a power-play goal.
Justin Peters stopped 28-of-29 shots for Carolina.
Mason made 36 stops for Philadelphia.
