Goldencents wins Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

ARCADIA, Calif., Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Goldencents set a blistering early pace and easily held on to win Friday's $1 million Grade I Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Golden Ticket finished second, 2 3/4 lengths back, and Brujo de Olleros was third in a strung-out finish. The 1 mile over a fast Santa Anita main track went in 1:35.12 with Rafael Bejarano riding the winner.

Goldencents, an Into Mischief colt, won the Santa Anita Derby over the same track this spring but then was 17th in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Preakness Stakes. After that, trainer Doug O'Neill restricted him to shorter races and he posted three straight seconds in graded stakes.

Verrazano, who finished 14th in this year's Kentucky Derby, was fourth in the Dirt Mile.
