NEW YORK, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Peter Budaj recorded a 27-save shutout Monday and Montreal spoiled the New York Rangers' debut at the refurbished Madison Square Garden with a 2-0 victory.

Budaj was busiest in the second period, stopping all 14 Rangers shots en route to his first shutout of the season and 11th of his career.

Tomas Plekanec scored on a second-period power-pay for a 1-0 Canadiens lead and Alex Galchenyuk added an insurance tally in the third for Montreal, which was coming off a 2-0 home loss to San Jose Saturday.

Henrik Lundqvist saved 25-of-27 shots for New York, which went 3-6-0 on a season-opening road trip as the final phase of Madison Square Garden's three-year, $1 billion renovation was being completed.
