NHL: Washington 5, Winnipeg 4 (SO)

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Alexander Ovechkin scored twice in regulation Tuesday and the Washington Capitals outlasted Winnipeg in a 5-4 shootout victory.

Martin Erat won it in the sixth round of the shootout with a snap shot that whistled between the legs of Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.

Pavelec's counterpart, Branden Holtby, tallied 43 saves in regulation and overtime and a couple more in the shootout. Holtby turned in 16 saves in the second period, in which both teams scored three goals.

Ovechkin chipped in two goals in the second at 15:50 and 18:02. Ovechkin leads the NHL with nine goals this season and took seven of Washington's 32 shots on goal.

Mikhail Grabovski and Troy Brouwer also scored in regulation for the Caps. Brouwer gave Washington a 4-3 lead early in the third period with a power-play goal, but Bryan Little tied it 4-4 at 7:04.

Little had two goals in the game. Grant Clitsome and Blake Wheeler also scored in regulation for the Jets, who ended their six-game homestand with a 2-3-1 mark.
