Tsonga heads to quarterfinals at Erste Bank Open

VIENNA, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had the lone break of the third set Thursday in a second-round victory at the ATP's Erste Bank Open in Austria.

Tsonga, currently in position to take the eighth and final spot in the ATP's World Tour Finals, got by Daniel Brands 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. Tsonga didn't manage a break point and dropped his serve twice in the second set but faced just one break point in the first and third sets, saving both.

Tsonga rallied from the off second set by taking 21-of-28 points on serve in the third set.

No. 2-seeded Tommy Haas needed nearly 2 hours to get by Miloslav Mecir 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) and third-seeded Fabio Fognini advanced with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Lukasz Kubot.

Qualifier Ruben Bemelmans ousted fourth-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0). Bemelmans lost his serve once over 15 games serving.

Robin Haase cashed in both of his break chances in the third set to eliminate seventh-seeded Vasek Pospisil and Dominic Thiem routed Pospisil's brother Jaroslav 6-1, 6-1.

Tsonga is matched against Thiem and Fognini is to take on Haase in quarterfinals Friday. The other pairings have Haas playing fifth-seeded Radek Stepanek and Bemelmans going against eighth-seeded Lukas Rosol.
