Tripoli soccer team pulls out of Libyan league after shooting attacks

TRIPOLI, Libya, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Tripoli's soccer team, al-Ahly, has left Libya's league on a temporary basis after its coach and a star player were targets of shootings, representatives said.

Players, staff and board members are set to meet Friday and decide on the next move, the Libya Herald reported.

The team's coach, Hossam al-Badri, was fired at after Saturday's game but was not injured.

He has since returned to his home country of Egypt.

Play Mohamed al-Maghrabi was shot in the arm Monday and has undergone surgery to remove the bullet.

Other players said they have received threatening text messages, the Herald said.

Team Chairman Sasi Buown has called on authorities to find those responsible for the attacks.
