FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A man has sued the Texas Rangers, claiming he was knocked unconscious attempting to break up a fight in 2001 at the Ballpark at Arlington, Texas.
The suit, filed in Tarrant County civil court by Don Alan Markum Jr., of Weatherford, Texas, says an "unruly, intoxicated" fan struck him in the left eye during the sixth game of the 2011 American League championship series against Detroit. It added Markum "verbally intervened" in a fight between fans sitting near him before stadium security personnel "finally appeared" and told all in the area, including Markum, who was regaining consciousness, to leave.
Other than offering an ice pack, security personnel did not seek prompt medical attention for Markum. He sustained a fractured lower orbital bone, beneath his left eye, that required three surgeries, the suit says.
Markum seeks damages including medical expenses and loss of earnings. The suit names the baseball team and the stadium beer-vending company as dependents, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Thursday.
