Qualifiers Dolonc, Arvidsson advance at Kremlin Cup

MOSCOW, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Qualifiers Vesna Dolonc and Sofia Arvidsson each won in three sets Tuesday in gaining second-round berths at the WTA's Kremlin Cup.

Dolonc defeated ninth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 by dropping only four points in five games serving in the third set. Dolonc took 60 percent of the points on serve in the match but suffered three points in the first set but survived despite two more in the second.

She won 19 of the 20 points when she landed her first serve, which was an impressive 80 percent of the time, in taking control of the third set.

Arvidsson won only one-third of the points in her opening set but rallied for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 win. After winning just four points -- 25 percent -- on serve in the first set, she won about 60 percent of those points the rest of the way.

No. 6-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro stopped Vera Dushevina 6-4, 6-3 with a pair of breaks in each set.

Daniela Hantuchova and Elena Vesnina both won with 6-1, 6-2 scores. Hantuchova ran past Arantxa Parra Santonja in 60 minutes and losing nine points over her eight games serving. Vesnina's rout came at the expense of Yaroslava Shvedova as Vesnina had five breaks in seven receiving games.

Tuesday's other first-round match saw Klara Zakopalova beat Danka Kovinic 6-4, 6-3. Zakopalova piled up six breaks in the win.
