DETROIT, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Mike Napoli clubbed a seventh-inning homer for the game's only run Tuesday and the Boston Red Sox grabbed a 2-1 ALCS lead with a 1-0 defeat of Detroit.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander had blanked the Red Sox on two hits over 6 1/3 innings when Napoli powered a pitch over the left-center field fence, breaking a scoreless tie.

John Lackey (1-0) scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings to post the decision, issuing no walks and striking out eight as the Red Sox posted a second straight American League Championship Series victory.

Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa combined for an inning of scoreless relief and Koji Uehara recorded the final four outs for the save, completing the shutout.

Verlander (0-1) finished with 10 strikeouts over eight innings, allowing four hits with one walk.

Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez each had a pair of hits for Detroit, which will attempt the even the series when it hosts Wednesday's Game 4.
