NHL: Colorado 5, Washington 1

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Alex Tanguay scored twice Saturday and the unbeaten Colorado Avalanche extended their hot start with a 5-1 victory over Washington.

Nathan McKinnon notched his first career NHL goal and added an assist, while Matt Duchene and Jamie McGinn also scored as the Avalanche improved to 5-0-0 under new Coach Patrick Roy.

Andre Benoit, Gabriel Landeskog and Peter Stastny each contributed a pair of assists and Semyon Varlamov turned aside 40-of-41 shots for Colorado.

Eric Fehr scored for the Capitals, who lost for the fourth time in five games starting the season.

Washington goalie Michal Neuvirth was torched for five goals on 28 shots.
