NHL: Nashville 3, Minnesota 2

NASHVILLE, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The Nashville Predators scored three goals in the first period Tuesday and held off the visiting Minnesota Wild 3-2.

Filip Forsberg and Colin Wilson scored power-play goals for the Predators and Eric Nystrom added a goal on a penalty shot at 11:14 to give Nashville a 3-1 margin.

Pekka Rinne fended off 32-of-34 shots from the Wild to give the Preds their first win of the young season. Nashville had 25 shots in the game. Both teams had 17 penalty minutes.

Nystrom was awarded the penalty shot when he was tripped and slid into Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom. Backstrom injured his leg in the crash and was replaced by Josh Harding, who was promptly beaten by Nystrom's wrister on the ensuing penalty shot.

Zach Parise gave the winless Wild a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 4:05 of the first period, but Minnesota did not score again until Jared Spurgeon closed out the scoring with a power-play goal at 7:26 of the second period.
