NHL: Detroit 3, Carolina 2 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Stephen Weiss completed a Detroit comeback Friday by scoring 3:13 into overtime to give the Red Wings a 3-2 victory over Carolina.

Detroit won for the second time in as many outings this season and spoiled the opener for the Hurricanes, who took a 2-0 lead into the third period.

Justin Abdelkader brought Detroit within one just 42 seconds into the third, but the Red Wings could not get the game tied until Henrik Zetterberg put a slap shot past Cam Ward with 17 seconds to go in regulation.

Jimmy Howard gave up goals to Radek Dvorak and Nathan Gerbe over the final 6:30 of the opening period, but turned aside the other 22 shots he saw. Ward allowed the three goals on 35 shots.

The score by Weiss was his first for Detroit after having spent the first 10 years of his career with Florida.
