NHL: Pittsburgh 3, New Jersey 0

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Marc-Andre Fleury began his 10th NHL season with a shutout Thursday, making 28 saves in carrying Pittsburgh to a 3-0 win over New Jersey.

New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur, meanwhile, sat out a season opener for the first time in 19 years.

Fleury recorded the 24th shutout of his career and equaled his entire total for the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.

Chuck Kobasew and Sidney Crosby scored first-period goals and Craig Adams added a tally in the third for the Penguins.

Cory Schneider got the start in goal for the Devils and allowed the three goals on 21 shots.

Brodeur, 41, has been with the Devils since the 1991-92 campaign. He reportedly will get the start on Friday when New Jersey plays its home opener against the New York Islanders.
