ST. PAUL, Minn., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Goals by Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter in the shootout Thursday brought Los Angeles a season-opening 3-2 decision over Minnesota.
The Kings managed only 16 shots on goal in the 65 minutes of regulation and overtime hockey, but Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom was beaten by both of the shots he saw in the brief shootout.
Minnesota never trailed in regulation, getting first-period goals from Matt Cooke and Jonas Brodin.
Drew Doughty scored for Los Angeles to create a 1-1 tie 7:40 into the game and Jeff Carter brought about a 2-2 deadlock with 6:46 left in regulation.
Quick stopped 27 of 29 shots to get the victory.
