TOKYO, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Venus Williams rallied for a three-set win Wednesday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Tokyo.

Williams, who beat world No. 2 Victoria Azarenka in the second round, defeated 13th-seeded Simona Halep 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. It is only the third time this year she's made it as far as a tournament quarterfinal. She won her previous matches in the quarters but lost in both semifinals.
