Maple Leafs' Kessel, Sabres' Rolston disciplined for brawl

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel was suspended and Buffalo Sabres Coach Ron Rolston fined Tuesday in connection with a weekend on-ice brawl.

The NHL announced Kessel would be banned for the remainder of the pre-season and Rolston would be penalized an undisclosed amount as a result of a free-for-all during Sunday's exhibition game between the two teams.

The league on Monday also handed a 10-game suspension beginning at the start of the regular season to Toronto forward David Clarkson for being the first player to leave the bench in the melee, which resulted in 211 penalty minutes being handed out.

Kessel was sanctioned for repeatedly slashing Buffalo enforcer John Scott before a third-period faceoff, which led to blows between the two. He was issued a match penalty at the time.

Rolston, meanwhile, was cited for selecting Scott to be placed opposite Kessel on the draw.
