New Zealand takes 4-0 America's Cup lead, Team USA calls off 2nd race

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Emirates Team New Zealand posted a victory in America's Cup Final action Tuesday, grabbing a 4-0 lead over defending champ Oracle Team USA.

The 1-minute, 5-second triumph came after New Zealand overcame an early U.S. lead with a dominating performance on the three-mile upwind leg to take control, forging a commanding advantage in the 17-race regatta on San Francisco Bay.

The reeling Americans then used their only postponement card of the regatta to call off the day's scheduled second race.

"We need to go back and regroup," Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill said after the race.

"We feel they have an edge on us at the moment, especially upwind. We need to do a bit of work here and we're going to play the card, strategically, and hopefully improve in time for the next race."

Next races are scheduled for Thursday.
