Mexico sacks national soccer team coach

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Jose Manuel de la Torre has been dismissed as coach of Mexico's national soccer team, the team's front office confirmed Saturday.

Mexico issued a written statement announcing de la Torre, known as "Chepo" would be replaced for Tuesday's World Cup qualifying match against the United States by Luis Fernando Tena.

De la Torre -- and his job security -- were the subject of media speculation in recent weeks, which intensified after Mexico fell to Honduras 2-1 Friday in another Cup qualifier.

The loss dripped El Tri to fourth place in the six-team CONCACAF qualifying pool for the 2014 World Cup.
