BOSTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Boston's Jon Lester outdueled Detroit ace Max Scherzer Tuesday, tossing seven innings of one-run ball for the Red Sox in their 2-1 decision over the Tigers.
Lester (13-8) collected his third win in four starts, surrendering eight hits without a walk while striking out nine.
Brandon Workman, Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa teamed up for scoreless eighth and Koji Uehara tossed a 1-2-3 ninth as American League East-leading Boston evened its three-game series.
Will Middlebrooks erased a 1-0 deficit with a two-run single in the fifth, providing all of Boston's offense.
Scherzer (19-2) absorbed just his second loss of the season after giving up two runs on five hits in a seven-inning performance.
Julio Iglesias got the only RBI for AL Central-leading Detroit.
