Tampa Bay joins suitors for 2018 Super Bowl

TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Officials in the Tampa Bay, Fla., area say they will make a bid to host the 2018 Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay joined six other cities as potential bidders for the big game, which would be played at Raymond James Stadium.

"All we've done is we had an opportunity to express to the NFL our interest," Rob Higgins, executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, told the McClatchy-Tribune Regional News Service. "We couldn't respond fast enough."

McClatchy said the NFL would probably whittle down the list of prospective hosts for 2018 in October and announce the winner of the lucrative game in May.

Tampa Bay has hosted four Super Bowls. The last one was in 2009.

Miami, Dallas, Denver, New Orleans, Minneapolis and 2012 host city Indianapolis were also in the running for the event, the report said.
