MLB: Detroit 6, New York Mets 1

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer in a four-run second inning Friday, sparking Detroit to a 6-1 victory over the New York Mets.

Cabrera, bidding to become the first player in major league history to win the triple crown in two straight seasons, helped the Tigers to their fourth victory in six games.

Both teams scored a run in the first, but the Tigers took the lead for good in the second when Torii Hunter's two-out double brought home Omar Infante.

Cabrera then hit the first pitch he saw from Daisuke Matsuzaka over the wall in left to score Austin Jackson and Hunter in front of him.

It was the 41st homer of the year for Cabrera, who began the night trailing Baltimore's Chris Davis by six. Cabrera, however, leads the majors in RBI (126) and batting average (.359).

Matsuzaka (0-1) made his first start in the majors since last October while with the Boston Red Sox. He compiled a 50-37 record with the Red Sox over six seasons, but had only four victories during the last two years.

He went five innings Friday, giving up five runs on six hits.
