Yankees' Ichiro Suzuki records 4,000th professional hit

NEW YORK, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- New York Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki notched his 4,000th professional career hit Wednesday, joining just Ty Cobb and Pete Rose in that regard.

Suzuki got the milestone hit against the Toronto's R.A. Dickey in his first at-bat at Yankee Stadium, sending a grounder past Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie into left field.

Suzuki, 39, recorded his first 1,278 hits in his native Japan from 1992-2000 before coming to the Seattle Mariners, where he racked up 10 straight seasons of collecting 200 or more hits.

The 10-time all-star was traded to the Yankees July 23, 2012.

Suzuki set the major league record for most hits in a season with 262 in 2004, breaking a mark that had been held by George Sisler since 1920.

Of his 2,722 major-league hits, 2,228 have been singles.
