DETROIT, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Danny Duffy allowed one hit over six innings in helping the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers Friday in the first game of a doubleheader.
Duffy (1-0) didn't allow a hit until there were two out in the sixth inning and Miguel Cabrera singled on a grounder that deflected off the glove of third baseman Emilio Bonifacio.
Duffy walked three and hit a batter. He also struck out three.
The only other hit Royals pitching allowed was an eighth-inning home run by Ramon Santiago off reliever Aaron Crow. Greg Holland pitched the ninth and earned his 33rd save.
Duffy outdueled Detroit starter Justin Verlander (12-9), whom the Royals touched for two runs, seven hits and two walks over eight innings. He struck out six.
Kansas City broke the scoreless tie with a home run by Eric Hosmer to open the fourth inning and went up 2-0 in the seventh when Justin Maxwell and Bonifacio had back-to-back doubles.
