CLEVELAND, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez each had two RBI during a six-run third inning Thursday that ignited Detroit to a 10-3 victory over Cleveland.
The Tigers won their 12th in a row, two shy of the longest winning streak in franchise history. Detroit swept the four-game series and in so doing opened a seven-game lead over the second-place Indians in the American League Central.
Cleveland had won 10 of 11 before running into the Tigers.
Detroit sent 11 men to the plate in the second and the Tigers quickly loaded the bases with one out against Zach McAllister.
Miguel Cabrera drew a walk to force in the first run, Fielder followed with a double that brought home two more and Martinez added a two-run double to make it 5-0. The final run of the inning came in on a throwing error by right fielder Drew Stubbs.
Martinez also had an RBI single during a two-run fourth and Cabrera contributed a two-run single in the fifth.
Max Scherzer (17-12) gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings to get the win. His 17 victories are the most in baseball.
McAllister (5-6) was roughed up for six runs on four hits and four walks in 2 1/3.
Detroit has won 14 in a row twice in its history, last doing so in 1934. Despite the Tigers' current run of success, it is only the second best active winning streak in the majors. The Atlanta Braves, who were idle Thursday, have claimed 13 straight.
