They grabbed control two innings later when Michael Young drew a lead-off walk from Cubs starter Edwin Jackson and Utley then provided the equalizer, smacking a pitch off the left-field wall for a triple.

He scored the go-ahead tally on Brown's groundout and Ruf followed with a solo homer for a 7-5 Phillies lead.

Philadelphia added a pair of crucial insurance runs on Young's sixth-inning RBI double and a Carlos Ruiz solo homer in eighth for a 9-5 advantage.

Kyle Kendrick (10-8) got the decision despite yielding five runs (four earned) on six hits over six innings as the Phils snapped a five-game skid.

Jackson (7-12) was roughed up for seven runs on 10 hits over five full innings for the Cubs, who dropped the first of a three-game set.
