10 rookies among Solheim Cup teams

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Charley Hull was selected for the European team and will be the youngest player ever to participate in the Solheim Cup.

Hull is 17 years, 4 1/2 months old, leaving her the youngest among the 24 players who will compete Aug. 16-18 at Parker, Colo., in the Solheim Cup. The youngest player on the U.S. side is Lexi Thompson, who is about 18 1/2.

The Solheim Cup is a biennial event pitting a European team against a team from the United States. The 2013 edition is the 13th competition. The United States, which has never lost on a U.S. course, had won eight times but the Europeans took the 2011 title 15-13.

U.S. captain Med Mallon on Sunday announced that her captain's picks were Gerina Piller and Michelle Wie. They will join qualifiers Stacy Lewis, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Angela Stanford, Brittany Lincicome, Thompson, Jessica Korda, Brittany Lang, Lizette Salas and Morgan Pressel.

Thompson, Korda, Salas and Piller are Solheim Cup rookies.

European captain Liselotte Neumann had four wild-card selections for her team. They are: Caroline Hedall, Jodi Edart-Shadoff, Giulia Sergas and Hull.

The players who qualified outright for the European team are Suzann Pettersen, Carlota Ciganda, Catriona Matthew, Caroline Masson, Beatriz Recari, Anna Nordqvist, Karine Icher and Azahara Munoz.

Neumann sends out six Solheim Cup rookies in Ewart-Shadoff, Sergas, Hull, Ciganda, Masson and Recari.
