No. 1 seed Kerber reaches Citi Open quarterfinals

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Angelique Kerber led a parade of players into the quarterfinals Thursday with a victory over Melanie Oudin at the Citi Open.

Kerber, playing in her first tournament since making a second-round exit at Wimbledon, eliminated Oudin 7-5, 6-0 as the women's draw of the tournament got back on track.

Seven of the eight second-round matches were played Thursday after rain suspended part of Wednesday's schedule.

Kerber will take on eighth-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova in the quarterfinals after Rybarikova fought off Jana Cepelova 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

Ekaterina Makarova, the third seed, breezed into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Caroline Garcia and will next meet Monica Niculescu.

Niculescu survived a battle with Madison Keys 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6).

Sorana Cirstea and No. 4 seed Alize Cornet will meet in another quarterfinal. Cirstea advanced with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Alison Riske and Cornet moved on by dismissing Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4.

Paula Ormaechea reached the quarterfinals when Olga Puchkova retired in the third set. Andrea Petkovic will meet Ormaechea after becoming the only player to advance on Wednesday.
