San Jose Sharks ink Joe Pavelski to five-year extension

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 30 (UPI) -- Center Joe Pavelski signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him with the San Jose Sharks through the 2018-19 season, the team said Tuesday.

Pavelski agreed to the extension less than a month after Logan Couture, who led the Sharks with 21 goals last season, agreed to a five-year extension.

"Joe has been an important part of our success over the last several years and we are excited to have him with our club for the next six seasons," said Sharks general manager Doug Wilson.

Pavelski, who was drafted by Sharks in 2003, has been a fixture with the Sharks over the years and scored 16 goals and 15 assists in 48 games during strike-shortened 2013 season. The 29-year-old Wisconsin native has tallied 150 goals and 186 assists in his career and has won 55 percent of his faceoffs.
