Berlocq drops one game in first-round of Croatia Open

UMAG, Croatia, July 23 (UPI) -- Carlos Berlocq, two weeks removed from his first ATP title, extended his recent strong play with a first-round win Tuesday at the Vegeta Croatia Open.

Berlocq, seeded eighth at the Croatia Open, won the ATP's stop at Bastad, Sweden, on July 14 and advanced to the quarterfinals last week. He improved his recent record to 8-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Josko Topic.


Berlocq landed just half of his first serves and the one game he lost was off his serve but that was the only break point he faced. He took 63 percent of the points when Topic served and finished off seven of his 12 break chances.

No. 5-seeded Tommy Robredo stopped Jan Hajek 6-3, 6-2 and sixth-seeded Martin Klizan defeated Paolo Lorenzi 6-2, 6-1 but qualifier Blaz Kavcic ousted seventh-seeded Florian Mayer 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 7-5.

Albert Montanes was a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 winner over Dusan Lajovic and will go against top-seeded Richard Gasquet in the next round.

Gael Monfils posted a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Mate Pavic while Viktor Troicki beat Antonio Veic 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 and Aljaz Bedene eliminated Boy Westerhof 6-2, 6-2.


Also Tuesday, Horacio Zeballos got by Borna Coric 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-0 and Andreas Haider-Maurer beat Jiri Vesely 6-4, 6-4.
