Youzhny waits out rain before winning at Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 22 (UPI) -- No. 6-seeded Mikhail Youzhny wasted little time after a lengthy rain delay Monday in finishing off a first-round win at the Swiss Open tennis tournament.

Youzhny defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 behind a 13-ace attack and losing only one game on serve.

But the match was even at 1-1 in the third set with Mathieu serving at 30-0 when the rains hit, causing a suspension of play for more than an hour. When they resumed, Youzhny turned the game around, immediately getting a break to take the lead. He allowed Mathieu just once more game the rest of the way.

Fifth-seeded Feliciano Lopez followed with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win over Jan Hernych in which he lost 10 points in 11 games serving. A break -- the only one of the match -- midway through the second set allowed Lopez to ride his strong service game to the second round.

Also Monday, Marcel Granollers, winning more than three-quarters of the points on serve, eliminated seventh-seeded Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-4 and Andrey Kuznetsov got past Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Stakhovsky is 0-4 since his upset of Roger Federer in the second round at Wimbledon.
