Carlos Berlocq bests Fernando Verdasco in Sweden for first title

BASTAD, Sweden, July 14 (UPI) -- Unseeded Carlos Berlocq of Argentina upended No. 8 Fernando Verdasco Sunday, claiming his first-ever ATP singles crown in the final of the Swedish Open.

Berlocq, ranked 74th in the world, dispatched his Spanish opponent 7-5, 6-1, improving to 1-1 in career finals.

His only other championship match appearance came last year at Vina del Mar in Chile.

The Argentinian converted 5-of-16 break-point chances and saved two of the four he faced en route to the victory.

Verdasco, meanwhile, has gone 0-6 in finals since his last title, which came at the 2010 Barcelona event.
